Another worthy winner of this year’s Apples4Ed grant is Lee’s Summit, Missouri’s Trailridge Elementary. This school features a thoughtful layout that’s designed to promote a better academic atmosphere while offering more flexibility to activity areas. The school is proud of its many clubs, one of the most popular of them is the garden club. All grade levels participate in this club and the PTA gets involved, too. The school garden is available to the entire school population for planting research, exploration, and the science curriculum, while the produce is used in the cafeteria, and the excess is donated to Social Services for families in need. This school will be using their grant to dismantle 2/3rds of the existing ground beds and revitalize them with a ground system for weed control, traction, and aesthetics. They’ll also be getting a new greenhouse that will be assembled by Boy Scouts working on their Eagle Scout project. They also need additional tools such as hand trowels, hand diggers, potato forks, hoes, spade shovels, wheel barrel, water wands, starter pellets, mulch, and pulverized dirt. The growing experience is a great way to help students learn about the nutrition of everything they grow and make a connection between growing food, making good choices, and a healthy diet. Apples4Ed is pleased to help support this fantastic and successful venture!
